Tina Cowley Reading Centre – Hartbeespoort
May 2021 Newsletter.
Hi everybody! Winter is upon us and for me, this is the time of the year to snuggle up with a good book whenever a chance presents itself.
According to the University of the People in California. (In conjunction with Columbia and Princeton Universities) the following are some of the reasons why the importance of reading is undeniable:
Reading expands the mind
and gives us more ideas. Reading has been proven to keep our minds young, healthy and sharp.
Reading also develops the imagination
and allows us to dream and think in ways that we would never have been able to before.
Reading allows for creative thinking,
it can inspire you when you are feeling bored, down or perhaps in a rut. Reading helps get the creative side of your brain thinking, unlike TV that really does not use much creative brain power.
Reading improves concentration,
it trains our mind on how to focus properly. We could all benefit from practicing our concentration skills.
Reading improves our vocabulary.
Saying new words out loud helps you better recall them, making these new words part of your own vocabulary.
Reading is the ideal way to relax
and calm those anxious nerves that are constantly at work. A recent study found that a mere 6 minutes of reading reduces muscle tension and slows down the heart rate.
Reading can provide a sense of belonging.
A book can also become a best friend, reading about others who also went through challenging times and managed to face their challenges can be a real inspiration.
Reading allows for a greater perspective
on the world and others, it allows us to see a different view of the world, one outside of our own.
“A child who reads will be an adult who thinks”
Overall if your child feels that they don’t like reading books, then perhaps they just have to find the genre for their own personal style – but keep trying, and keep searching for what’s right for them.
With that being said, all the children at the reading centre have been working hard and show huge excitement and enthusiasm during every class.
(Right) Some of our learners who have finished the Ticket programme. Well done guys!!
Now they are ready to start with spelling, stories and comprehension.
Evaluation time:
It is evaluation time again. I will be commencing with this during the first week of June.
The evaluation is twofold:
First the child’s basic reading skills are tested ie: Form perception, sequencing, auditory processing and spatial relations. These are all important skills, not only for reading but also to be able to cope in the class environment.
Secondly the child’s reading speed and comprehension is tested. As you know our goal is to get the children up to the international reading speed for their grade.
